Doing Content Right

**Author**: Steph Smith | **Pages**: ~284 | **Chapters**: 6 | **Generated**: 2026-06-04

A practitioner's system for building a content business (blog + newsletter) from zero: find a defensible niche, build your home, distribute, win search, and monetize — without the common traps.

How to Use This Skill

  • **Without arguments** — load the core frameworks below for reference.
  • **With a topic** — ask about `SEO`, `pricing`, `distribution`, `niche`, `affiliates`; I find and read the relevant chapter.
  • **With a chapter** — ask for `ch04`; I load that specific chapter file.
  • **Browse** — ask "what chapters do you have?" for the full index.

When you ask about a topic not in Core Frameworks below, I read the relevant chapter file before answering. Never invent metrics — the book's figures are 2020-era; flag when something may be dated (e.g. specific tools, search tactics).

Core Frameworks & Mental Models

**The thesis**: Your goal isn't "write articles" or "send emails" — it's to *create things people love and find value in*. A content business runs on the same mechanics as a startup.

Find your wedge (Ch 1)

  • **Personal Monopoly** — build around a skill/experience/understanding only *you* (or very few) can deliver. It's your strongest moat. Find it at your **Idea Ikigai**: the intersection of *interesting* + *doesn't yet exist* + *your unique exposure*.
  • **Saturation reframe** — a niche isn't "too crowded" by headcount; what matters is your *likelihood to out-innovate* it. Room always exists for **the new (if relevant)** or **the old (if even 1% better)** — read against the **Diffusion of Innovation curve** (start a new curve inside a niche).
  • **"What for who" one-liner** — one sentence = biggest pain solved + your differentiator + core audience. If you can't write it, don't publish yet.
  • **Niche = targeted, not small.** Start specific, expand later (shrinking is harder). Validate with search volume + existing communities + market direction.
  • **Infinite leverage, but 0 × audience = 0** — great writing scales globally only if it has a **distribution vector** built in.

Build the home (Ch 2)

  • **The Unwritten Contract** — define your **non-negotiables** up front; breaking them is what loses trust. Operate a **Publication = blog (discoverable) + newsletter (owned)**. You own your list; social is rented land.
  • **Create value > capture value** — give openly first, monetize later. Keep a **threshold of excellence**: publish nothing below it.
  • **Painkiller, not vitamin** — anything paid must relieve a felt pain people will price, never "more of the same."
  • **Stack**: pick good-enough tools in days (cheap domain, Ghost/WordPress, any ESP). "A name may make you but won't break you." Most choices are **Type 2 (reversible)** → act fast.

Distribute (Ch 3)

  • **Distribution is a multiplier** — the best content with no distribution still scores 0.
  • **Brick by Brick — 6 channel types**: Bedrock · Viral · Social · Syndicate · Targeted · Paid. **Depend on Bedrock** (SEO, newsletter, Quora); **post on Viral** (HN, Reddit) but never depend on it.
  • **CODES** — score any channel on Cost, Ownership, Dependability, Effort, Scalability. Diversify to stay antifragile.
  • **Explore & Exploit** — test 1–3 channels in 2–4 week cohorts, cut non-fits, double down, tier 0–3.
  • **Do things that don't scale** under ~100 fans: 1:1 outreach, reply to everyone, leverage **weak ties**. Set **SMART goals as inputs** you control; ignore **hollow metrics**.

Win search (Ch 4)

  • **Intent before keywords** — Google the term, inspect the top-3 result *type*. Long-form ranks only for **informational** intent (vs. navigational/transactional/commercial).
  • **CRU** — content must be **C**redible, **R**elevant, **U**sable.
  • **Keyword choice = Intent + Volume + Competitiveness.** Target **long-tail** (~200–5,000/mo) you can rank #1 for; assess difficulty by rivals' DA + backlinks.
  • **Second Chances** — a fresh domain that builds ~30 links (cross **DA 10**) gets retested and re-ranked by Google.
  • **Associated Problems** — if no one searches your product/name, rank for the adjacent problems your audience already searches.

Monetize (Ch 5)

  • **SWEAT** — score each method on **S**calability, **W**ork, **A**udience, **T**imeline before committing.
  • **Trust-to-method mapping** — monetize the perception you've earned: opinion→affiliates, ability→course, entertainment→sponsored copy.
  • **Sponsorship pricing** = a metric you control (clicks/opens) × a value multiplier; calibrate with 5–10 sponsor conversations. Capture inbound demand with a **Promote page**.
  • **Let the market decide** — pre-sell to de-risk; start price low, raise until conversion dips. Price on **perceived value**, not effort. Protect **the contract** when you start charging.

Don't sabotage yourself (Ch 6)

  • **3 biggest mistakes**: "If you write it, they will come" (distribution isn't optional) · getting too micro · not defaulting to action.
  • **Default to action** — for reversible decisions, ship; see ~200 feet ahead, one step a day.
