Choose Tuist when the priority is understanding and reducing supported build and test work across environments. Optimize the project first, then its execution environment. Keep supported existing machines and add [Tuist caching and insights](/marketing-markdown), or review [Enterprise self-hosting](/en/docs-markdown/guides/server/self-host/server) when a private deployment is required.
[RunsOn](https://runs-on.com/docs/) manages ephemeral GitHub Actions runners in the customer's AWS account. Its [Magic Cache](https://runs-on.com/docs/performance/caching/) changes the Actions cache backend to S3 in that account, while preserving compatible workflow cache actions. It is not just a cheaper machine without caching.
Its [pricing](https://runs-on.com/pricing/) separates an annual license, tiered by runner volume, from infrastructure billed directly by AWS. RunsOn states it does not add per-minute markup; do not categorize that license as a runtime-metered fee.
Its [platform documentation](https://runs-on.com/docs/runners/platforms/) currently covers Linux, Windows, and GPU workloads and explicitly says **macOS is not yet supported**. This limitation matters for Xcode workflows; verify it again before procurement rather than assuming every EC2-backed runner manager supports EC2 Mac.
| Requirement | Tuist | RunsOn evidence to evaluate | | --- | --- | --- | | Control where execution and cache data live | Keep current compute, use supported hosted integrations, or evaluate [Enterprise self-hosting](/en/docs-markdown/guides/server/self-host/server). | RunsOn executes jobs and stores Magic Cache data in your AWS account. That is a meaningful ownership and network-boundary choice. | | Reuse compatible toolchain outputs | [Cache](/marketing-markdown/cache) provides supported remote build-output integrations for developer, CI, and agent machines. | Magic Cache accelerates the Actions cache protocol with customer-owned S3. Compare it separately from a remote compilation or action-output cache. | | Run Apple builds | Tuist integrations can run on existing supported Macs; optional Tuist Runners provide macOS subject to invitation. | The cited platform page currently excludes macOS. Do not assume a Linux runner can execute an Xcode job. | | Diagnose build or test work | [Build Insights](/en/docs-markdown/guides/features/build-insights), [Tests](/marketing-markdown/tests), and [MCP](/en/docs-markdown/guides/features/agentic-coding/mcp) expose supported records. | Evaluate RunsOn's infrastructure and cost diagnostics against the toolchain records needed; neither view is a substitute for the other. |
You want an improvement layer that does not require choosing AWS or changing CI, or need compatible local/agent reuse and toolchain-specific evidence. Your Gradle, Bazel, Elixir, or Xcode workflows need the feature-specific integrations Tuist supports; Xcode jobs still require Macs. Engineers can inspect and contribute to Tuist's [public implementation](https://github.com/tuist/tuist), subject to component terms.
Verify data residency and producer/reader authentication, then pilot a [supported Tuist integration](/en/docs-markdown/guides/get-started) without changing the execution environment. Compare compilation, cache transfers, test execution, and total usage against the existing baseline. Measure avoided work separately from provisioning, queueing, or machine-price changes. Review [Tuist self-hosting](/en/docs-markdown/guides/server/self-host/server) before adoption if policy requires private artifact and record storage.

This comparison is written by Tuist and evaluates infrastructure ownership separately from build acceleration.
Platform support and commercial terms change. Customer-owned infrastructure still needs operational ownership. Tuist's Elixir integration provides insights, not remote build caching, and selective testing requires generated Xcode projects. Public source does not imply unrestricted server self-hosting. Tuist Runners are invite-only with no public pricing; no cheapest-runner claim is made.
