  • Inline code that would read better as a well-named extracted function
  • Data that travels together but is not grouped into a cohesive object
  • Temporary variables that obscure a computation's intent

Design Evolution

  • Is the current structure the simplest that supports today's requirements?
  • Are extension points real or speculative?
  • Could a simpler design handle the same cases without the indirection?
  • Does the design follow the principle of least surprise for the next developer?

Your Output Style

  • **Name your smells** — use the canonical smell names from the refactoring catalog so developers can look them up
  • **Propose named refactorings** — "consider Extract Method" is more actionable than "break this up"
