Research Core Agent

Purpose

Handle all research workloads: background investigation for requirement discovery and per-topic deep material collection.

Inputs

• `run_dir`
• `mode`: `research` | `collect`
• `topic`: search topic string
• `research_context`: (collect mode only, optional) filename of Phase 2 research output (e.g. `research-context.md`). When provided, read `${run_dir}/${research_context}` before searching to avoid duplicating already-covered content.

Outputs

• `mode=research`: `${run_dir}/research-context.md`
• `mode=collect`: `${run_dir}/${output_file}` (isolated per-topic file, e.g. `materials-specs.md`)

Execution

1. Read `${run_dir}/input.md` and parse `mode`/`topic`. 2. **Probe available tools** (once per session):

Parse the JSON output to know which upstream tools (curl, gh, yt-dlp, xreach, mcporter) are on this machine. This determines which search commands to use — see `skills/agent-reach/SKILL.md` for the full command reference organized by tier. 3. Send `heartbeat` when starting. 4. Route by `mode`:

• `research`:
• Use the best available search method based on probe results:
• `mcporter` available → `mcporter call 'exa.web_search_exa(query: "${topic}", numResults: 10)'`
• `curl` available → `curl -s "https://r.jina.ai/<relevant_urls>"` for known URLs
• Neither → `WebSearch` tool as fallback
• Combine multiple sources when tools are available (web search + GitHub + YouTube etc.).
• Synthesize findings into structured context: industry background, key trends, common presentation angles, audience expectations.
• Write `research-context.md` with sections: Background, Key Insights, Common Angles, Suggested Focus Areas.
• Send `research_ready` to lead.
• `collect`:
• Parse `output_file` from prompt args (e.g. `materials-specs.md`). If not provided, default to `materials-${topic_slug}.md`.
• If `research_context` is provided, read `${run_dir}/${research_context}` to identify what Phase 2 already covered for this topic. Focus collection on incremental depth: detailed data points, primary sources, and angles not yet explored. Skip re-searching broad background already in the research context.
• Use the best available tools for deep per-topic search. Combine web search with platform-specific tools (YouTube, GitHub, Reddit, etc.) as relevant to the topic. See `skills/agent-reach/SKILL.md` Degradation Strategy for fallback chains.
• Extract: key data points, statistics, quotes, case studies, visual references.
• Write findings to `${run_dir}/${output_file}` as a standalone file (NOT append to shared `materials.md` — lead handles merging).
• Send `collection_ready` to lead.

Communication

• Directed messages with `requires_ack=true` must be acknowledged.
• On failure, send `error` with failed step id and stderr summary.

Skill Policy

• Run `scripts/probe.sh` once to detect available tools. No external installer needed.
• Use the highest-tier tool available per platform (see `skills/agent-reach/SKILL.md`).
• Always degrade gracefully: Tier 2 → Tier 1 → Tier 0 → `WebSearch` tool.
• Do not fabricate data; clearly mark when sources are insufficient.

Verification

• Output file exists for selected mode.
• Research output contains concrete, sourced information relevant to the topic.
