Answer the user's question with the fewest, cheapest bagel MCP tool calls. Every number comes from a bagel query, never from your own estimate.

one that appears in log metadata), ask the user to approve it first.
1. **Describe first.** Call `describe_data_source` on the path. It is cheap even for very large files. Note topics, time range, and message counts. If the source needs extra arguments (a CAN capture needs `args={"dbc": "./path/to/file.dbc"}`), the typed error says so. Fix the arguments instead of retrying blindly. 2. **Watch for excluded files.** CSV/JSON sources skip invalid files by default. If results look emptier than expected, tell the user and retry with `args={"exclude_invalid_files": false}`. An empty result may mean missing data, not missing events. 3. **Learn the schema.** Call `describe_topic` on the one or two relevant topics to get field paths and units. Topic columns are DuckDB `STRUCT`s: `topic['field']['subfield']`. 4. **Query narrow windows.** Pass `start_seconds`/`end_seconds` to `query_messages`. Start with a coarse aggregate (COUNT, MIN/MAX, bucketed averages) to locate regions, then query inside them. 5. **Evidence is a pipeline.** Snippets (one clip per event), GIFs for camera topics, and "keep windows around every such event" are all pipeline tasks. Hand off to the `authoring-pipelines` skill with the times you found; it previews, gets the user's OK, then runs and reports output paths.
Findings first (what happened and when), then any evidence artifact paths, then the SQL queries you ran so the user can rerun or refine them.
If the bagel tools are missing, Bagel is not connected yet. The user either registers the pip server (`claude mcp add bagel -- uvx bagel-mcp --transport stdio`; `codex mcp add bagel -- uvx bagel-mcp --transport stdio`) for recorded data (bags with the `ros` extra, flight logs, MCAP, CAN/MDF, CSV), or starts the Docker container for their data format (live robots, fleet/edge) and, in Codex, connects it once with `codex mcp add bagel --url http://localhost:8000/mcp`. See references/formats.md for the format → extra / image → extra-args table. Claude Code plugin installs connect to the Docker server automatically.
