Bug Detection
- Logic errors: wrong comparison operators, off-by-one, inverted conditions, unguarded decrement that can go negative
- Null/undefined mishandling: missing null checks, optional chaining gaps
- Type mismatches: incorrect casts, wrong generic parameters
- Resource leaks: unclosed streams/handles; for JDBC/IO, `Connection`/`Statement`/`ResultSet`/file handles opened outside try-with-resources (or without a `finally`) leak on early return or exception
- Locale-dependent string ops: `toLowerCase()`/`toUpperCase()`/`format()` without an explicit `Locale` (e.g. `Locale.ROOT`) when the result is used as a key, compared, or persisted — breaks under locales like Turkish
- Silent truncation: a value written to a fixed-width column/field without a length check (consult the schema/migration) → data loss or insert failure
- SQL three-valued NULL logic: a `WHERE col = <value>` (or `!=`) filter on a **nullable** column silently drops NULL rows, since `NULL = x` is UNKNOWN. Flag when NULL should count as a real value (fix: `COALESCE(col, default)`); do not flag when excluding NULL is clearly intended.
- Clock-domain mismatch: a timestamp stored with a **wall clock** (`time.time()`, `System.currentTimeMillis()`, `Date.now()`) later combined in one expression with a **monotonic** clock (`time.monotonic()`, `System.nanoTime()`, `performance.now()`), or vice-versa → garbage age/elapsed value. Flag only when the two domains are MIXED in one computation — consistent single-domain use is correct.
- Name-binding traps (Python): a function-local `from m import x` / `import x` / assignment binds `x` as local for the **entire** function, so any use of `x` on an *earlier* branch raises `UnboundLocalError`. Flag a local import/binding that shadows a module-level name used elsewhere in the same function.
- Referential-integrity / cascade gaps: deleting a parent row (or key) without also removing or NULLing child rows / a derived index that reference it, where no `ON DELETE CASCADE` exists → orphaned, still-queryable rows. Flag the missing child cleanup in the same transaction.
Concurrency & thread-safety
When changed code shares mutable state across threads (async tasks, executors, request handlers, singletons), check:
- **Iterate-and-mutate**: removing from / adding to a collection while looping over it → `ConcurrentModificationException`. Use `Iterator.remove` / `removeIf` / collect-then-apply.
- **Non-thread-safe shared state**: a plain `HashMap`/`ArrayList`/counter mutated from multiple threads, or a field published without `volatile`/synchronization → data race, lost updates, visibility bugs. Prefer concurrent collections / atomics / proper locking.
- **Non-atomic check-then-act**: `if (map.get(k)==null) map.put(...)`, `count++`, or lazy init via double-checked locking on a **non-`volatile`** field → races / unsafe publication. Use atomic/compute APIs; DCL fields must be `volatile`.
- **Blocking call under a lock**: remote/IO/`sleep` inside a `synchronized` block serializes all callers → contention/stall. Hoist it out of the critical section.
- **Swallowed `InterruptedException`**: a catch that neither re-interrupts (`Thread.currentThread().interrupt()`) nor exits the loop → lost cancellation; the thread becomes uninterruptible.
- **Collision-prone IDs**: identifiers built from a timestamp plus a random suffix are not unique under concurrency → duplicate-key/data loss. Prefer an atomic sequence or UUID.
- **Inconsistent lock discipline**: a shared map/dict/collection read and written under a lock in most places but mutated (`clear()`, `pop`, put) on one path **without** that lock → race. Applies in any language (Java `synchronized`, Python `threading.Lock` over a module dict, etc.). Flag the unguarded mutation; do not flag a single GIL-/runtime-atomic op the code documents as intentionally lock-free.
- **Stale async response (overlapping loads)**: a handler fires an async load on repeated user actions where a slower earlier request can resolve *after* a newer one and overwrite fresher state. Flag only when there is NO generation/request-id (or cancellation) guard checked after the `await` — correct generation-guarded code is not a finding.
Security (OWASP Top 10)
- Grep for hardcoded secrets: `(password|secret|api_key|apikey|token|private_key)\s*[:=]\s*["'][^"']+["']`
- Verify each match is NOT a test fixture, env var reference, or placeholder
- SQL injection: string concatenation in queries
- Command injection: unsanitized user input in shell commands
- XSS: innerHTML/dangerouslySetInnerHTML/v-html without sanitization
- Path traversal: user-controlled file paths without validation
- SSRF: user-controlled URLs in server-side requests
- Auth/secret default traps: a secret/token/credential compared with `==`/`.equals()` whose configured value can be empty or blank (unset default) → an empty input is accepted. Require non-blank and fail closed.
Completeness Analysis
When changed code filters, switches, or branches on a set of related types/values, verify ALL relevant cases are handled:
- `instanceof` chains on discriminated unions or event streams (e.g., Angular Router events, HTTP events) — check framework docs or type definitions for missing cases representing terminal/error states
- `switch` statements on enums or string literals — check for missing cases (especially error/cancel/default)
- Event type filters (`.pipe(filter(...))`) — if filtering for "start" and "end" events, check for cancel/error/abort var
