An open-source AI coding agent for the terminal and desktop — a project for research and learning.
Coderix is an AI coding agent that runs in your terminal or as a desktop app. It can read, write, and edit files, execute shell commands, search code, and more — all through natural-language conversation. One core engine powers several front ends: an Ink/React terminal UI (TUI), an Electron desktop app (React DOM + Monaco + xterm), a VS Code extension, and TypeScript / Python SDKs.
Coderix is an independent, open-source project for research and learning — a study of how LLM coding agents are built: agent loops, tool execution, context management, permissions, and multi-agent orchestration.
Coderix is a pnpm monorepo:
| Package | What it is |
|---|---|
packages/coderix-core | Framework-agnostic agent engine — query loop, tools, context, providers |
packages/coderix-cli | CLI entry point + Ink/React TUI |
packages/coderix-tui | Reusable terminal-UI primitives |
packages/coderix-desktop | Electron desktop app (React DOM + Monaco + xterm) |
packages/coderix-vscode | VS Code extension |
packages/coderix-sdk | TypeScript SDK |
packages/coderix-sdk-python | Python SDK |
The ./install.sh installer supports several scopes. Run it from the repo root:
git clone https://github.com/AgenticMatrix/coderix.git
cd coderix
./install.sh --local # CLI only
./install.sh --desktop # Desktop app only
./install.sh --all # Both CLI + Desktop
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
./install.sh --local | Installs deps, builds the CLI, links coderix onto PATH |
./install.sh --desktop | Installs desktop deps + the Claude Code runtime (does not rebuild the Electron bundle) |
./install.sh --all | Both of the above |
./install.sh --reinstall --desktop | Clean rebuild: wipes dist/out + node_modules, then rebuilds the desktop bundle |
./install.sh --reinstall --all | Clean rebuild of both CLI + desktop |
When to use --reinstall: the desktop app runs the pre-bundled
packages/coderix-desktop/dist/main/index.cjs. A plain --desktop only installs
dependencies, so a source change (e.g. a fix in coderix-core) won't take effect
until the Electron bundle is rebuilt. After git pull — or after editing any
packages/coderix-* source — rebuild with:
./install.sh --reinstall --desktop
# or, lighter (no dependency wipe):
pnpm --filter @coderix/desktop build
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/AgenticMatrix/coderix/main/install.sh | bash
This installs coderix from the npm registry (the default path). For development,
clone the repo and use the --local / --desktop flags above.
Coderix ships several interfaces backed by the same core engine:
| Command | Interface |
|---|---|
pnpm run dev:cli | TUI — the terminal interface (Ink/React) |
pnpm run dev:desk | Desktop — the Electron app (React DOM) |
pnpm run dev:vscode | VS Code — the extension |
# TUI (terminal) version
pnpm run dev:cli
# Desktop (Electron) version
pnpm run dev:desk
# Desktop — one-click launcher, auto-frees port 5173
./start_desk.sh
# VS Code extension
pnpm run dev:vscode
Other useful scripts: pnpm run build (core + cli), pnpm run build:all (+ vscode), pnpm run typecheck, pnpm test.
