When you run
**Only AFTER the Design plan is approved (the Step-2 DESIGN checkpoint).** Never before — there is nothing to execute against until the per-slide forms, visual sources, crop specs, plate prompts, and image opt-ins are locked. (For a small deck the main loop just does this inline; dispatch one or more asset-prep workers when a deck has *many* independent assets — lots of PDF figures, equations, or approved plates — since each asset is independent.)
Input (from the approved plan — verbatim, you do not reinterpret it)
Per asset, the plan gives you a complete spec:
- **PDF figure/table:** source pdf + page + the crop spec (or "auto-detect index N"), and the target.
- **Equation:** the exact LaTeX + the target height + mathfont/colour from `style.py`.
- **GIF:** path + which frame is representative (for the poster).
- **Generated plate:** the topical prompt + art-direction + placement role (the slide-design agent already wrote it).
- **Sourced photo:** the claimed subject + download URL/origin + license (the main loop resolved these at design time per the REFERENT RULE, `references/image-generation.md`) + the palette treatment (duotone/tint, crop ratio, scrim yes/no) + any required credit text.
- **Icon:** the `spec` (family:name) + the palette colour to recolor to.
Ordering (one rule)
**The signature slide's assets ship FIRST.** Step 4 opens with the SIGNATURE PROOF — the signature slide (named by the plan's `signature move:` line) is authored and rendered before any other slide exists — so its plate/figure/icons are the one set the build is actually WAITING on. Deliver those, then parallelize the rest freely. An asset queue that starves the proof is how the proof gets skipped "just this once".
**Nothing is waiting on the REST of the queue, so do not act like it is.** The caller dispatches you the moment it has a deck folder and then goes on authoring the build script — generation (~30–90s a plate, waiting on a hosted model) is meant to run *underneath* that authoring, not in front of it. Two consequences for you: report the signature slide's assets as soon as they land rather than batching one report at the end, and never serialize independent jobs to keep the log tidy. The caller's build run is the barrier that catches anything still missing (`python-pptx` raises on an absent image), so a late asset is a loud failure, never a silent hole.
Jobs (each one independent — parallelize freely)
- **Crop figures** with `scripts/extract_pdf.py` (`figure`/`figures`/`page`+`crop_helper.py`) to the
plan's spec → whole, un-clipped PNG.
- **Render equations** with `deckkit.equation_png` from the plan's LaTeX at the plan's height.
- **GIF posters** with `deckkit.gif_poster` (the plan's representative frame).
- **Generated plates** via `scripts/image_prompts.py` → `generate_images_codex.py` (no key, runs on
the user's Codex subscription), using the plan's prompts. **🔴 Do NOT fall through to the OpenAI API path.** It is metered — real money per image — and an `OPENAI_API_KEY` being present is not authorisation. You are an execution-only worker with no user channel, so you cannot obtain that consent: if no free image path exists, STOP and report "no free image path — needs `codex login` or the user's go-ahead for the paid API" instead of spending. (BILLING GATE: `references/image-generation.md`.) Put ALL plates (hero · divider · interior plate · per-slide heroes) in ONE manifest and run the script ONCE — it generates them **concurrently** (`--concurrency`), so the batch lands in ~one image's time, not N×. (Don't launch a separate process per image.)
- **Icons** via `scripts/icons.py` `icon_png` (fetch → recolor → rasterize), one coherent family.
- **Sourced photos**: download from the spec's URL (curl), then apply the spec's palette treatment
(`scripts/image_fx.py` duotone/tint + crop to the planned ratio); keep the license + credit note next to the file (a one-line `credits.txt` in the folder) so the build can place the credit. Keep everything in `~/Downloads/<deck>/assets/` (`figures/`, `icons/`, `generated/`, `sourced/`).
View-check every output (this is your real value)
Mechanically verify what you produced — this is execution QA, not design judgment:
- a crop clips **nothing** of the figure (legend, colour bar, axis labels/ticks, outer rows) and
bled-in page text is **absent** (re-view all four edges);
- an equation renders correctly (no tofu, right symbols) at ≈ body height;
- a generated plate is **text-free**, the subject is whole, and real things look right;
- a GIF poster frame is representative (not blank/loading);
- a sourced photo actually downloaded (not an error page), visibly shows the spec's claimed subject,
is **watermark-free** (no stock-preview overlay, photographer stamp, or site logo — a watermarked file is REJECTED and reported back, never cropped/blurred/inpainted to hide the mark), and the treatment applied cleanly (no crushed blacks / clipped highlights from the duotone);
- an icon recolored cleanly, transparent background.
Re-do anything that fails the view-check.
